Research: “Shield” from junk food or weight loss – The role of self-control
[/fusion_title][fusion_text] Can one really resist the view of a sweet – calorie “bomb”? And yet, experts say that everything is a matter of … mind and self-control. A scientific research published in Cell Metabolism last October shows that our eating habits and weight loss in the long run are directly related to how “disciplined” our mind is. In a particularly interesting study published in “Cell Metabolism”, scientists from Canada performed MRI on 24 people whilst showing them photographs of various foods. Then the same people started a diet that had a limit of 1,200 calories a day. Brain analysis by participants in the research focused on the areas associated with food intake, including the lateral prefrontal cortex, associated with so-called self-regulation and also including the abdominal prefrontal cortex, which is associated with motivation and desire. The cerebral function and response of the 24 subjects was examined again one month later but also after three months while sticking to the diet mentioned above. Over time, stimulation of the abdominal prefrontal cortex in front of images with high calorie index foods and in sweets such as cakes. And most importantly, this stimulation (the desire for unhealthy foods) was further reduced to those who had lost most pounds by applying the 1,200 calorie diet a day. At the same time, self-regulation and self-control (lateral pre-frontal cortex) of those who achieved great weight loss increased significantly.
Weight Loss as a barometer
According to the researchers, changing the way that these brain regions function, was directly related to whether weight loss was achieved in the subjects who participated in the study and followed the diet. Among other things, this conclusion reinforces the assertion that in order to be able to increase self-control when it is on a table full of … calories, it should provide an opportunity for the cognitive behavioral approach of psychotherapy and neurorehabilitation (training of brain functions). In any case, the constant “battle” to reduce the desire for unhealthy and “poor” dietary foods should be helped by a proper weight reduction program. Moreover, according to research, this is the way for a person to give his chance to a balanced and healthy diet.
Unhealthy nutritional profile of Greek kids
It is worth noting that recent research by Greek scientists has shown that many children and teenagers in our country do not eat breakfast, resulting in a more unhealthy life “profile”. The study, which was conducted in 177,091 children aged 8-17, shows that nearly one in four (22.4% of boys and 23.1% of girls) does not eat breakfast for a variety of reasons. Scientists have found that kids who avoid breakfast are usually those who are older, tend to be overweight or obese, generally have worse eating habits, are not physically active enough, or sleep as little as eight hours, while spending more than two hours daily in front of a screen. Bad eating habits, poor sleep and increased screen usage, increase the chance that a child will not eat breakfast by 80%, 23% and 22.5% respectively. The researchers, headed by the professor of the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition Science of the Harokopio University of Athens, Lambros Condos, published the study in the journal of Nutrition & Dietetics.
