The words of a father who wants to motivate his teenage daughter before an important game can make her feel much more pressured and eventually have the exact opposite results of what he wanted. The comment a woman might make to her husband after having returned from their run to the park, for example, that he could have run faster, may cause him unpleasant feelings and as a result next time, he will either run slower or not at all. The specific obstacles are what personal trainers encounter almost daily. However, psychologists have extensively studied the issue of motivation, but also the way in which a person should be approached to persuade him to follow the right path and eventually reach his destination.

First of all health and strength, not appearance

In a new and particularly interesting study, researchers divided a group of women into two groups. One team worked out with a trainer who was trying to motivate them based on their health and the strength they would gain. The second trainer focused on the appearance of the women as well as their weight loss. It is worth noting that the workout plan, environment and music were exactly the same. When the training cycle was completed, the women who were led by the personal trainer focused on their health and well-being said they were more satisfied with the shape they had acquired and the way they felt. This particular trainer used expressions such as “this exercise is vital to gain strength in the legs,” and “these muscles will help you get the speed you are dreaming about.” In the other class, women heard comments such as “with this exercise the fat will disappear in the legs”, “cellulite must be gone”. There, the results were not the same. Most importantly for a personal trainer who has taken on trainees who want to get good physical condition is to convince them of the mood change, the higher energy levels, even  the fact that if they reach a certain level their daily routine will be simpler and more relaxing (for example, they can climb stairs without gasping). “You will have a lot more energy on a daily basis ” is a much better motivation than “Your abdomens will be enviable”.

The goal is not victory but improvement

A Stanford University research found that praising (parents, teachers, etc.) the children for their efforts, for the strategies they are pursuing and their hard work are the only methods that ultimately bring the desired results and success. On the other hand, comments on their intelligence (“you have to think smart”, “you have to be smart”) are very likely to give children the illusion that there is a shorter path … which gives a different illusion. The same can happen to adults, who need a motivation to exercise. A key element to take into consideration is to cultivate within them the mentality that nothing is done without hard work, discipline and planning.

Unconditional support to the athlete 

Researchers have asked hundreds of athletes in colleges in the United States the following question: “What is the worst memory you have since you actively engaged in a sport when you were young?” Most responded: “The way home in the car with my parents after a game in which my performance was bad”! They also asked if there were some words their parents said to them, which they felt much better. “The answer: “I love seeing you play!” These words “worked” in the athletes’ psychology precisely because there was no anxiety about the performance. All they show is unconditional support and love that helps children continue to work hard to achieve their goal.
