Ως Άσκηση για Υγεία (Health Related Exercise) ορίζεται η άσκηση που στοχεύει πρωτίστως στην πρόληψη ή αντιμετώπιση των προβλημάτων υγείας (χρόνιων ή μη), στη μείωση των κινδύνων που σχετίζονται με αυτά και γενικά στην προαγωγή της υγείας των ασκούμενων, με αποτέλεσμα την βελτίωση της ποιότητας ζωής τους.  Σύμφωνα με τις κατευθυντήριες οδηγίες της ACSM, όλα τα άτομα που συμμετέχουν σε συστηματικά προγράμματα άσκησης θα πρέπει να εντάξουν στο εβδομαδιαίο προπονητικό τους πλάνο ένα  ασκησιολόγιο στο οποίο να δίνεται έμφαση στην πρόκληση θετικών προσαρμογών στο καρδιοαναπνευστικό και μεταβολικό τους σύστημα, ώστε να βελτιώνονται και να διατηρούνται σε ικανοποιητικά επίπεδα όλοι οι δείκτες υγείας. Από τα παραπάνω γίνεται αντιληπτό ότι η Άσκηση για Υγεία διαφέρει από το γνωστό σε όλους μας Fitness, τόσο σε φιλοσοφία, όσο και σε περιεχόμενο. Το περιεχόμενο του ασκησιολογίου της Άσκησης για Υγεία δεν περιλαμβάνει τις ίδιες μορφές άσκησης με αυτές του Fitness. Είναι πιο απλό, αλλά πολύ πιο στοχευμένο στο τι θέλει να προσφέρει στον κάθε ασκούμενο ξεχωριστά. Οι στόχοι αυτοί πηγάζουν από τις ιδιαίτερες ανάγκες ή τα προβλήματα υγείας που μπορεί να έχει ο κάθε ασκούμενος. Επομένως, το ασκησιολόγιο επικεντρώνεται σε συγκεκριμένες, ειδικά συνταγογραφημένες (τύπος, ένταση, διάρκεια) ασκήσεις, σκοπός των οποίων είναι η πρόληψη ή και η αντιμετώπιση αυτών των συγκεκριμένων προβλημάτων υγείας ή/και των παραγόντων επικινδυνότητας για την εμφάνισή τους, των παραγόντων που επηρεάζουν την κάθε πάθηση / κατάσταση, η πρόληψη επανεμφάνισης επεισοδίων, η διατήρηση της υγείας και της καλής φυσικής κατάστασης των ασκούμενων.
