[/fusion_title][fusion_text] Όσοι δεν έχουν βάλει στη ζωή τους την αερόβια άσκηση ή τη δυναμική προπόνηση, έχουν περίπου διπλάσιες πιθανότητες να εμφανίσουν κατάθλιψη. Έρευνα επιστημόνων του UCL, η οποία δημοσιεύτηκε στο περιοδικό BMC Medicine, αναφέρει επίσης πως η ελάχιστη ενασχόληση με τη γυμναστική αυξάνει κατά 60% τις πιθανότητες εμφάνισης άγχους.

Ο επικεφαλής της έρευνας, Aaron Kandola, διδακτορικός φοιτητής στο τμήμα Ψυχιατρικής του UCL, τονίζει πως «καταφέραμε να παρέχουμε περισσότερες αποδείξεις σχετικά με τη σχέση που έχουν η φυσική και ψυχική υγεία, καθώς και πως η συστηματική γυμναστική δεν βοηθά μόνο στη βελτίωση της φυσικής κατάστασης αλλά ταυτόχρονα διαδραματίζει καθοριστικό ρόλο και στην ψυχική υγεία». Στη μελέτη συμμετείχαν συνολικά 152.978 άνθρωποι, ηλικίας από 40 έως 69 ετών. Στην αρχή, τα επίπεδα αερόβιας ικανότητάς τους μετρήθηκαν με τη χρήση στατικού ποδήλατου, ενώ η μυϊκή τους δύναμη μετρήθηκε μέσω ενός τεστ δύναμης. Επίσης, συμπλήρωσαν ένα ερωτηματολόγιο που θα βοηθούσε να φανεί εάν έχουν συμπτώματα κατάθλιψης και άγχους.

Επτά χρόνια αργότερα, τα τεστ επαληθεύτηκαν και οι μελετητές βρήκαν πως η συστηματική αερόβια άσκηση και προπόνηση δύναμης έχει άμεση σχέση με την καλύτερη υγεία. Όσοι από τους συμμετέχοντες ασχολήθηκαν ελάχιστα με την άσκηση, είχαν 98% περισσότερες πιθανότητες για κατάθλιψη, 60% περισσότερες πιθανότητες εμφάνισης άγχους, καθώς και 81% περισσότερες πιθανότητες εμφάνισης κοινών ψυχικών προβλημάτων, σε σχέση με όσους ασκούνταν συστηματικά. Παλαιότερες έρευνες είχαν επίσης δείξει πως όσοι γυμνάζονται είναι λιγότερο πιθανό να εμφανίσουν ψυχικές παθήσεις, ωστόσο όλες λάμβαναν υπόψιν τους όσα ισχυρίζονταν οι συμμετέχοντες για την φυσική τους δραστηριότητα, χωρίς να τεστάρουν τα επίπεδα φυσικής τους κατάστασης.
