Μέσα από μια τέτοια συμμετοχή, οι επιστημονικές έρευνες έχουν αποδείξει ότι μειώνεται ή ακόμα και αναστέλλεται:
- Η μείωση της οστικής πυκνότητας (με αποτέλεσμα την μετρίαση ή την επιβράδυνση της εμφάνισης ή της πορείας της οστεοπόρωσης) της μυϊκής μάζας,
- Η μείωση της κινητικότητας,
- Η μείωση των μεταβολικών διεργασιών,
- Η αύξηση της λιπώδους μάζας και του σωματικού τους βάρους,
- Τέλος, βελτιώνεται η πορεία των διαφόρων χρόνιων παθήσεων, ενώ υπάρχει και σημαντική μείωση στη χορηγούμενη ποσότητα της φαρμακευτικής τους αγωγής (Chodzko-Zajko et al., 2009; Hakkinen, Kraemer, Newton, & Alen, 2001; Hardy & Grogan, 2009; Pereira et al., 2012; Szulc, Beck, Marchand, & Delmas, 2005; Trappe et al., 2001; Trappe et al., 2000; Williams, Higgins, & Lewek, 2002).
Παράλληλα, μειώνεται ο κίνδυνος ενός σοβαρού τραυματισμού (κάταγμα κ.τ.λ.), η περίοδος ανάρρωσης μετά τον τραυματισμό, ενώ αυξάνεται η ψυχολογική διάθεση τους, η αυτονομία και το αίσθημα σιγουριάς προς τον εαυτό τους για την επιτυχή ολοκλήρωση των καθημερινών δραστηριοτήτων τους (ψώνια, ανέβασμα σκαλοπατιών κ.τ.λ. (Hardy & Grogan, 2009; Jubrias, Esselman, Price, Cress, & Conley, 2001; Kalapotharakos et al., 2005; Pereira, et al., 2012; Williams, et al., 2002). Αποτέλεσμα των παραπάνω είναι η βελτίωση των συνθηκών και της ποιότητας ζωής τους (Chodzko-Zajko, et al., 2009; Hagerman et al., 2000; Hikida et al., 2000; Rhodes et al., 2000). Για τον λόγο αυτό οι μεγαλύτερες επιστημονικές εταιρίες στον τομέα (NSCA και AFAA) αναφέρουν ότι η συστηματική άσκηση είναι υψίστης σημασίας για αυτή την ηλικιακή ομάδα. Ωστόσο, επειδή τα ηλικιωμένα άτομα ανήκουν σε κατηγορία ειδικών πληθυσμών (Δ.Ο.Υ., 2004), η συστηματική τους άσκηση θα πρέπει να γίνετε σε ειδικά διαμορφωμένους χώρους άσκησης, να είναι αυστηρά καθορισμένη και εποπτευόμενη από τον θεράποντα ιατρό τους και έναν εργοφυσιολόγο, ενώ ο υπεύθυνος γυμναστής να είναι ειδικευμένος πάνω σε αυτό, για την αποφυγή δυσάρεστων καταστάσεων και προβλημάτων. Έρευνες συνιστούν τη πραγματοποίηση άσκησης μέχρι και 4 φορές/εβδομάδα, η οποία θα πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να περιλαμβάνει μεταξύ άλλων και αερόβια άσκηση καθώς και άσκηση αντιστάσεων, το περιεχόμενο των οποίων θα είναι αυστηρά καθορισμένο βάσει των ατομικών αναγκών και χαρακτηριστικών του κάθε ατόμου από τον θεράποντα ιατρό και τον εργοφυσιολόγο (Bird, Tarpenning, & Marino, 2005; Braith & Beck, 2008; Kohrt, et al., 2004; Kraemer & Ratamess, 2004).
